How the evidence was made

Each sample is a short synthetic encode of one profile, made with FFmpeg by the repository's corpus script. The test harness opens it on the real playback engine (mpv v0.41.0-1175-g492bae076, FFmpeg N-127552-gee8cbd7db) with no window and no sound device, and checks that:

  • playback starts, or fails the way the sample expects;
  • codec, size, bit depth, chroma, alpha and HDR are detected correctly;
  • an exact seek lands within 100 ms;
  • the position advances in real time, with no decoder drops.

It ran twice on one machine: Windows 11, Intel i5-10300H, Intel UHD 630 and NVIDIA GTX 1650. Once with hardware decoding off, once with it allowed. 12 samples were decoded on the GPU; the rest fell back to software automatically.

What this does not cover: real camera files, long files, audio/video sync for professional formats (measured only for H.264, HEVC and VP9 in the live app), and how HDR looks on a real display.
