NewNOVA is on Android: the Windows player on your phone, updating itself.Get the APKWindows 0.3.0

A calm, honest media player for Windows, now on Android.

NOVA plays the video and audio files on your computer, remembers where you stopped, and tells you exactly what it decoded, and what it can't.

What it does, and how we know

  1. Plays what you open, exactly.

Exact seeking within 100 ms, position advancing in real time, no decoder drops: measured on 55 synthetic samples, once in software and once with hardware decoding.

    Verified in harnessMedia Atlas

  2. Picks up where you stopped.

Progress is saved on your computer and survives restarts. Moved or renamed files keep it. Clips under a minute start from the beginning, on purpose.

    VerifiedContinuity

  3. Says what it decoded.

One key shows codec, bit depth, chroma, HDR and whether the GPU or the processor is doing the work. Useful when footage looks wrong.

    VerifiedInsight

  4. Explains instead of failing.

Broken files get a reason and next steps. Editing projects and camera RAW are recognised and explained. If one stream can't be decoded, the rest keeps playing.

    VerifiedHow it explains

  5. Keeps to your computer.

No account. No telemetry or analytics code. The only request NOVA makes is an update check to GitHub, which you can switch off. The engine runs with web fetching, scripts and outside config files switched off. We have not yet captured network traffic to prove the absence of other connections.

Back where you were

Home opens on the title you were watching, with the time left and one Resume button. Progress survives restarts, and moved or renamed files keep it.

Every feature, with its test status

The same player, in your pocket

NOVA for Android carries the Windows app over to touch: the same Home, Library and player, the same exact seeking, the same habit of saying what it can't do.

  • Same rooms

Continue, your folders, search and sorting, poster frames, the queue, playlists and resume.

  • Exact, by touch

Preview frames while you drag, a slower finger for fine scrubbing, double-tap to skip, A–B loop and frame step.

  • Updates itself

Checks GitHub, verifies the download's SHA-256, and Android installs it only with NOVA's signature.

  • Asks for nothing

No account and no storage, media or microphone permission. Files stay on the phone.

It plays through the phone's own decoders. DTS, TrueHD, styled subtitles and subtitle delay arrive with NOVA's own engine on Android, which is not built yet. No iPhone download.

Check a format before you trust it

The Media Atlas lists every format NOVA has been tested with, and every one it hasn't, with the evidence behind each tier.

A file being recognised is not a promise that every codec or profile inside it will play. MXF, MOV and MKV are containers; the codec inside decides.

74 entries: 55 tested harness samples and 19 formats documented without a sample.

NOVA 0.2.0 is out, on Windows and Android.

Free for Windows x64, tested on one Windows 11 machine, and as an Android pre-release that has not yet been tested on a device. Expect rough edges; the known ones are listed on Product.

NOVA's code is MIT OR Apache-2.0. The Windows installer bundles a third-party engine build with GPL components, so it is GPL as a whole, with the engine's source and licences. The Android APK contains no GPL or LGPL code.
